Roadside Bombs in Kandahar: Images From an Afghan War Zone

Sep 22 2010, 8:00 AM ET

KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan -- Walking up a winding dirt path, the smell of rotting flesh hits me. Then I see it, face frozen, eyes black, its gaping belly full of maggots. The horse's head is connected to the remains of its body by a long strand of flesh. The leg that set off the buried bomb is gone. I notice some of its intestines splattered in the mud behind me. The U.S. patrol I'm with has stopped here to wait for an explosives team that's clearing another bomb just up the road. I stuff leaves up my nose to block the smell.

Female Marines a new weapon in Afghanistan

MARJAH, Afghanistan — Sgt. Vanessa Jones and her teammates filed through the countryside with a squad of U.S. infantrymen and Afghan troops. They pushed through tall grass and leaped over canals, spilling into fields of sunflowers and the emerald spikes of marijuana plants rustling above their helmets. Then they waited, tucked into a ridge of dirt, while fellow Marines checked on a bomb dug into the road.

Interview with ISAF Commander Petraeus

We're Not 'Going to Turn Afghanistan into Switzerland'

09/19/2010

Troops, money and a plan were long lacking in the battle against the Taliban in Afghanistan. In a SPIEGEL interview, ISAF Commander David Petraeus, discusses these failures with unusual frankness. The general says he is concerned about the increasingly symbiotic relationship between terror groups in the region.

SPIEGEL: General, we are meeting on the day of the Afghan parliamentary elections. A recent poll conducted by Kabul University and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a German political think tank, found that 70 percent of the Afghan population have no confidence in their national parliament at all. Sixty-five percent aren't satisfied with the government's performance. What does that mean for your work?
