Local bases escape brunt of Marine Corps cuts

Active-duty ranks to be trimmed by 10 percent over five years

The Marine Corps plans to cut its active-duty ranks by about 20,000 in the next five years, because of the end of U.S. combat operations in Iraq, the rapid drawdown underway in Afghanistan and national budget strains.
