Marine forces in demand: special operations grows into Afghan role

Demand for the unique capabilities of special operations forces after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks led to the genesis of the first Marine Corps units. Now, even as the United States winds down two long wars, the worldwide need for the elite troops continues to grow, setting the nascent force of Marine operators at crosscurrents with broader military trends.
